Destroy & Rebuild???

The year started off great for Hip Hop with a few artists taking maximum advantage of the attention that spinned off from the NamTv Zone Sessions, one of those artists being Curtis "Catty Catt" Yearwood, the 061Music label owner who feels that Hip Hop has taken a turn for the worst in Namibia.

Catty Catt took to the media to express his views, he has been doing radio and newspaper interviews for the "Destroy & Rebuild" campaign. In an article from the Informante newspaper titled Catty Cat trashes local Hip Hop he claims that Namibian Hip Hop artists are not working hard to put Namibia on the map, and that Namibians lack quality songs and originality to woo music lovers, as our local Hip Hop industry is fading.

There is some level of truth in this to a certain extent, like in any other country, there are upcoming artists who are "lost", as they are trying to figure out what direction they should take in music, and of course there are those who can't afford good quality studios but somehow manage to get the public's attention. These are artists who aren't even acknowledged in the industry. While Catty Cat has been busy focusing on these particular artists to shun the industry, other artists have been busy doing what he claims is not being done.

Let's recap back to the events of last year till present, with everything that has been happening before Cat's campaign:

KaniBal gave his latest offering No Mercy, Jericho released his latest album Let Me Be me, Paradox released their mixtape The Grey Tape, Willy G released his beat-tape, The Boy Jay dropped his project The Leo Manuscript, Brain The Tool  released his E.P Brown Boy: Experiences of an adolescent and Black Vulcanite released their EP Remember The Future, which was an international success and they also scored a record deal with South African based label Rude World Records. We also witnessed The TRIBE pack up a venue making their first appearance as a group, we watched Wamboseun tour around the world with his album last year, as well as hosting one of the biggest Hip Hop shows in Namibia if not the biggest show with fellow artists The TRIBE, and S.A's Jack Parrow as supporting acts, we also saw the release of Sinna G & Jean-Michael's albums, whose show was a big success and Mr Diamonds's mixtape launch among other shows.

Apart from that, D-jay released a hit single Namibia Worldwide from his upcoming album Champion, M.C.-RAY released another hit single Do It For Me ft D-jay  from his upcoming album Child Of The Sun which was number 1 on the Radio Energy Countdown for eight consecutive weeks, K.K released yet another hit Down Girl ft Lil D from his upcoming album Start From Scratch, Stix released a hit single Gone ft P and Unknown Division made their debut as a group with their single Knights of the Nineties which premiered on MTV Base, later releasing their critically acclaimed mixtape Alkebulan Connection earlier this year.

All these and many more are top notch projects by Namibia's legitimate Hip Hop artists, these projects encompassed originality, creativity and quality. For a country with a small population such as Namibia, building an industry is a slow process but last year and every year before that has been a good year for Hip Hop, even though there has been some hiccups for a few artists such as Catty Cat. Artists have been working hard, and loyal fans have been with them along the way. And while the industry has been busy with all the things mentioned above, where has Catty Cat been? Which makes you wonder, what is there to Destroy right now?  What has he come to destroy and rebuild, because a load of Hip Hop artists have been working towards the progression of the Namibian Hip Hop industry as proved, if anything needs to be destroyed and recreated it is Cat's own career.

Some may argue that Catty Cat's lashing out is nothing more than a publicity stunt to gain attention back to himself after being off the scene for a while, even though he released a single Me and My Baby which went unnoticed, the rapper's career has been cold since winning the Hip Hop Artist of The Year 2012 award.

Yes, the negatives in Nam Hip Hop brought about by "some" insignificant upcoming rappers do exist, but how could all the works of our great rappers over time be tainted by such insignificance in the first instance? The game didn't stand still when Catty Cat's career did, people kept moving on, while the circus drama has been good entertainment for the media and beneficial to Catty Cat alone, it has painted a bad image for Hip Hop in Namibia.

NHHN wanted to bring the facts out before fans get carried away with this commotion, making it known that before Catty Cat figured out a way to grab people's attention at the entire Hip Hop community's expense, people have been putting in work and that Hip Hop is not the joke he's trying to make it seem, if you ever wondered why nobody in the game entertained or paid attention to his disrespect -because everybody else sees it for what it is, people probably being referred to by "Destroy & Rebuild" aren't worth mentioning or talking about, so why waste valuable time to form a campaign debating and discussing about them?
There has been more talk than music coming from the 061Music owner, time to shift focus and pay attention to what is important Catty Cat.
